Our Church History & Community
Our History in Connecticut
The Virgin Mary & Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church in Connecticut represents a vital aspect of the Coptic community's identity and heritage. Established in 1986 with nine families, this church has become a cornerstone for Copts living in the region. As the Coptic population in Connecticut grew, so did the need for a dedicated space to serve their religious, social, and cultural needs.
The church serves not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for community gatherings, cultural celebrations, and educational programs — all aimed at preserving the rich traditions and beliefs of the Coptic Orthodox faith. Through worship, community festivals, and religious classes, the church fosters a sense of belonging and identity among Copts living in Connecticut, connecting them to their roots and to the broader Coptic family worldwide.
In August 2020, our church acquired a new facility in Hamden — situated on 8 acres of land, consisting of a large church with a gym and stage, a school with large fields, a convent, and a rectory. We pray that Christ may continue to bless our church through the intercessions of the Virgin Mary and Archangel Michael.
Community Engagement & Spiritual Programs
Our church is dedicated to serving not only its members but also the broader local community, demonstrating its commitment to creating a welcoming environment that nurtures faith and belonging.
Religious services form the backbone of church activity, providing a space for worship and spiritual growth. In addition to the Holy Liturgy, the church offers educational programs designed to deepen the understanding of Coptic traditions and teachings. Bible studies, Coptic language classes, and discussion groups are regularly organized, enabling members of all ages to immerse themselves in their faith and heritage.
Cultural events also play a significant role in bringing the community together — celebrating Coptic heritage through music, hymns, and fellowship. Our Friday Family Night brings families together weekly for prayers, praise, Coptic classes, and Bible study.
The church also prioritizes outreach and service as a means of serving those in need. Youth engagement is particularly emphasized, offering programs where young people can develop a strong sense of faith and community responsibility.
Through these diverse activities, Virgin Mary & Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church continues to fulfill its mission of spiritual growth and community service — contributing to a stronger, more connected congregation and society at large.
